Winds of Change Magazine

Winds of Change — the magazine of AISES — has been the foremost publication for Indigenous people in STEM for almost 40 years.

Sharing opportunities and stories of career and educational advancement for all Indigenous people in STEM.

Fall 2024 Issue

In this issue you'll find a new treatment of the "AISES Notebook," which is now laid out in two sections. "AISES Inspires" includes news of the organization and our regular columns on "Living Legacy" and "Cultivating Indigenous Resilience." The second part is placed toward the end of the issue and includes news on AISES members, chapters, and regions. As in every fall issue, you will also find a feature story on "10 Native STEM Enterprises to Watch." It's a reminder that flourishing Indigenous businesses are key to building solid STEM jobs in Indian Country. You will also learn how the consequences of climate change are an immediate challenge for some tribes whose members are dealing with a crisis of too much — or too little — water. And don't miss the profiles of this year's Professional Award Winners. You'll be inspired by their stories and dedication.

2024 Special Regional Conference Issue

Welcome to the special Regional Conference Issue of Winds of Change. In this edition we focus on the amazing things that happen when we bring the AISES mission to our members. You'll find snapshots of five of the conferences and a close-up look at highlights of two of them: Region 2 in Pasadena, Calif., and Region 4 in Stillwater, Okla. You can also read about NAISEF (the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair) held at Oklahoma State University and the AISES in Canada Gathering in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Spring 2024 Issue

In this issue we’ve devoted a feature article to mentoring. Don’t miss the description of the new Full Circle Mentorship program that AISES is undertaking with the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. This initiative holds great opportunities not only for our students, but also for our prospective mentors, who often tell me that they get as much — or more — out of the mentoring relationship than their young mentees. Another focus in this issue is our annual roster of the Top 50 Workplaces for Indigenous STEM Professionals. See which organizations made the 2024 list of diversity leaders and learn what some their staff members have to say.

30th Annual Special College Issue

Welcome to the 2023–2024 Special College Issue of Winds of Change. If you are in the process of choosing a college, you and your family are most likely doing some serious investigating. To make it easier, we’ve already done a lot of research and used it to put together our exclusive list of the “Top 200 Colleges for Indigenous Students.” This issue can also support your college experience in other ways. You’ll find profiles of a variety of colleges, a look at a vibrant AISES College Chapter, highlights of tribal colleges and universities, and some of the many fine schools in Canada. The feature articles in this issue are positioned to help you overcome obstacles and succeed. “Making It … Or Faking It?” discusses the challenge of imposter syndrome, with tips on what to do about this common but potentially debilitating self-doubt. You also can read about how to use the proven system of SMART goals to stay on track. Be sure to check out the personal stories students share, especially because they are so motivated to help other Native young people find their way.
