How to Make the Most of the AISES National Conference

Are you ready for this year’s AISES National Conference? Join Indigenous STEM professionals and students from across the United States and Canada from October 19–21, 2023, in Spokane, Wash. Over the course of three days, you’ll have the chance to network with other professionals, learn new information that you can apply to your own career, and discover the many opportunities and programs offered through AISES. With so much to do and see, here are a few ways you can get ready for the conference.

 

Do a Little Prep Work

You’re a busy working professional, but it will serve you well to set aside some time to prepare for the conference. Look over the list of speakers, sessions, and presentations, and highlight those you want to be sure to see. Confirm all of your travel arrangements, ensure your manager and colleagues know you’ll be out of the office, and arrange for your work to be covered while you are away. Preparing now will make for a less stressful and more productive conference experience.

With so much on the agenda during the AISES National Conference, it’s important to reflect on what you want to get out of the three days in Spokane. What will fulfill you personally and what events will likely have the most impact on you professionally? Here are a few must-dos from veteran National Conference-goers.

 

Remember who you are. Be proud of your Indigenous roots by proudly displaying it each day. Donning your moccasins, bolo tie, ribbon skirt, or beaded accessories strengthens your culture. Indigenous-made accessories, like silver and turquoise pins look great on lapels. A Lauren Good Day or B. Yellowtail scarf can bring a suit or simple skirt to the next level. Wearing a traditional hairstyle also is a great option. In short, Indigenous wear is professional wear. And Sequoyah Fellows, be sure to wear your Sequoyah Medal. If anyone is curious about how to become a Sequoyah Fellow, there will be an information desk in Spokane, where they can learn more.
