Don’t hesitate to come up to people.”SequoyahFellows BreakfastThe special commitmentthat Sequoyah Fellowsmake to AISES goes beyond  nancial contributionsand extends to making themselves available as mentors and leaders, and in the many other roles in which this dedicated group servesthe AISES family. Sequoyah Fellows are honored and new Fellows are welcomed (this year 64 new Sequoyah Fellows were recognized) at theannual Sequoyah Fellows Breakfast that has become a treasured tradition at every conference. It opened with a blessing from Council of Elders member Stan Lucero, who told the students, “Everything is connected so learn humanities along with STEM knowledge, then turn around and help.”Lieutenant William Harber, diversity director with the Navy Recruiting Command, offered three tips on achieving a personally successful conference: (1) Leave with at least three new contacts and keep up with them for the duration of your career; (2) Make eye contact — you’ll look more con dent if you avoid your cell phone and look at people; and (3) Ask questions that show you’ve done your research.Senior National Student Representative HannahBalderas urged attendees to extend themselves. “I had people who told me ‘that could be you,’” she said. “Otherwise I wouldn’t have thought I could be up here on stage.”Junior National Student Representative Steven Just encouraged his fellow students to download the app and participate in as many conference events as possible, keeping in mind the Safe Camp standards and dressing professionally.Canada National Student Representative Brielle Thorsen advised attendees to practice networking and engage in meaningful conversations with exhibitors that interest them. “Share information about yourself,” she said. “There are so many amazing people here to engage with.”A special part of every National Conference is the gathering of the Sequoyah Fellows, lifetime members who have demonstrated a special commitment to the AISES mission.8 WINDS OF CHANGE • OKC » 2018 AISES National Conference Wrap-Up aises.org
