I know many of you look forward to this issue for our annual rundown of 10 top STEM elds — that is, career paths where we expect to see signi cant growth. You’ll nd that feature in these pages, but this year we are doing things a little differently. Instead of highlighting careers in disparate areas of STEM, we’re focusing on geoscience. The wide-ranging discipline of geoscience encompasses careers in so many areas that touch on the Earth and its resources. As Hehewutei “Cody” Amakali, a seniorgeoscientist with the ExxonMobil Exploration Company, says, “The beauty of geoscience is that it is a multidimensional discipline that relies on many skill sets. The possibilities are seemingly limitless with a geoscience curriculum.” We hope you will discover some of those possibilities starting on page 20.This issue also brings you what I think is one of the most inspiring stories ever of Indigenous achievement — the Ho¯ku¯le’a. The history of the Ho¯ku¯le’a project, and their traditional Polynesian voyaging canoes that navigate long trips on the open ocean, is heartening in itself. But what the ongoing success of these voyages proves about the capacity of traditional Indigenous knowledge and science is what’s reallyimpressive. Read about it on page 26.On page 4 you’ll nd stories of membersand chapters in AISES Notebook, where we are inaugurating a new column — Chapter Spotlight — to introduce you to our many individual chapters. In this issue, you’ll get to know the Phoenix Professional Chapter. As always, for news of opportunities at all points on your STEM path, turn to Career Builder on page 30, and Paths in Education on page 34.Meanwhile, summer may be just getting started, but your AISES staff is very busy getting ready for fall’s big event, the NationalConference. This year’s AISES family get-together is set for October 4–6 in Oklahoma City. It will feature the largest college and career fair in Indian Country, as well as your chance to learn at multiple sessions, network with potential employers and universities, catch up with old friends — and make some new ones. As always, there will be both surprises and traditions you can count on.I wouldn’t want you to miss this unique event — see you in Oklahoma City!
