One reason every issue of this magazine is importantto AISES is the role it plays in fostering our sense of community. After all, when we speak of the AISES family we are talking about a living cross-generational organization committed to each member’s well-being and achievements — a family.Connecting this family is what Winds of Change is all about. So I’m especially happy to see the article on page 24 about our amazing Council of Elders. In it you’ll meet themost recent members to join the council, as well as read about the impressive backgrounds of the more longtime members. Our elders and I hope you will feel free to turn to them for guidance. As new council member Norbert Hill Jr. says, “We serve as a rudder for the organization.”In this issue we are also introducing “Inside AISES,” a new column in the AISES Notebook section, on page 4, where we take a look at the advisory councils and boards that function behind the scenes to advance the AISES mission. Also in AISES Notebook, you’ll nd news of the organization as well as updates on individual chapters and members. With the Leadership Summit, the RegionalOur elders and I hope you will feel free to turn to them for guidance. As new council member Norbert Hill Jr. says, “We serve as a rudder for the organization.”Conferences, NAIVSEF, and more, it’s been a very busy time!As we do in every spring issue, we have our annual rundown of the Top 50 Workplaces for Native American STEM Professionals, on page 16. A commonality among the organizations on this roster is their commitment to inclusion— you can expect them to recruit, support, and advance the careers of their diverse employees. Be sure to check out our up-close look at some of the outstanding companies on the list and read what their Native employees have to say.If you’re like me, you nd the stories of our members and the paths they are taking to reach their goals to be one of the mostinspiring parts of every issue. Turn to the AISES People section on page 8 for pro les of people like NASA aerospace engineer Josef Sanchez, who reminds us that “with our cultural perspective, we have a distinct and important voice.”Our goal at AISES is to help you nd and use your own distinct voice.Ta’Tura Tsiksu (With Much Respect),Sarah EchoHawkPawnee Nation of Oklahoma AISES Chief Executive O cer2 WINDSOFCHANGE•SPRING2018
