Held in August in Prior Lake, Minn., the conference offered training and other educational opportunities to promote community-driven research and demonstrate best practices for American Indian and Alaska Native scientists. In addition to increasing opportunities for collaboration among Native researchers, theevent aims to increase the effective use of traditional medicine and Indigenous knowledge.aises.org3Member News,Joseph Alia, associate professor of chemistry and College Chapter advisor at the University of Minnesota, Morris, is participating in implementing the school’s new planning grant from the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and the Lumina Foundation. The grant will help educators close the achievement gap in STEM studies for Indigenous students. Dr. Alia was part of the Morris team attending the  rst national meeting of Native American–Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTI), held in Denver last July. The university is the only NASNTI in the Upper Midwest.,In June Rick Stephens gave a TED-style talk at the National Academy of Sciences’ Changing the Face of STEM Forum, hosted by the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Stephens is the vice chair of the AISES Board of Directors.,AISES CEO Sarah EchoHawk joined leaders from the Society ofHispanic Professional Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, and National Society of Black Engineers at the annual meeting of the 50K Coalition, a broad collaborative with the goal of producing 50,000 diverse engineering graduates.
