AISES has partnered with the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) over the last few years in order to bring summer internships to AISES student members.  BPA is a federal nonprofit agency based in the Pacific Northwest. BPA is part of the U.S. Department of Energy and is self-funded covering its costs by selling its products and services. BPA markets wholesale electrical power from 31 federal hydro projects in the Columbia River Basin, one on federal nuclear plant and several other small nonfederal power plants.

Research Mentors Sought for Native America and Pacific Islander Research Experience Program-The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) is seeking Research Mentors (ABD or PhD) for the Native American and Pacific Islanders Research Experience (NAPIRE) Program in Costa Rica. NAPIRE is funded by NSF’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation. NAPIRE is a highly rewarding research internship program for minority undergraduate students enrolled in accredited institutions in the US and Pacific Island Territories. The goal of NAPIRE is to facilitate a successful summer research experience for Native American and Pacific Islander undergraduate students and strengthen their interest and potential for pursuing careers in biology or environmental science. Mentors live at the Las Cruces Station where they provide personal, direct guidance in ecological research for one or two students. Mentors do not receive honoraria, but NSF funds their transportation to and from Costa Rica, as well as room, board, station use, research permits, in-country transportation, and needed equipment. Mentors are needed June 20th through August 3rd, 2016.

Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) and Western Mining Action Network (WMAN)-2015-2016 Grassroots Communities Mining Mini-Grant Program-The goal of the Mining Mini-grants Program is to support and enhance the capacity building efforts of mining-impacted communities in the U.S. and Canada to assure that mining projects do not adversely affect human, cultural, and the ecological health of communities. Applications accepted are accepted three times a year: June 1, October 1, and February 1. Applicants will be notified of the funding decision within one month of the application deadline.

The Certified Federal Surveyors Program (CFedS) Scholarship- Recently, AISES partnered with Certified Federal Surveyors to allow it to better serve its members who are a Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) or Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT).   The Certified Federal Surveyors Program (CFedS) is co-administered by the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) and it provides unique and extensive training for PLS in understanding federal survey processes.  The voluntary program, approved by the Secretary of the Interior and the Office of the Special Trustee, CFedS is designed to: increase the pool of qualified surveyors to perform work on or near federal interest lands, including Indian lands; to ensure such surveys comply with federal regulations and policies, decreasing the chance and expense of rework; and provide opportunities to increase self-determination for Indian tribes.

21st Century STEM: Integrate to Innovate Conference- Phoenix, AZ; January 21-23, 2016. Designed by teachers for teachers, this conference highlights the integration of STEM into engineering, computer science, biotechnology, sustainability, and other CTE-based programs. The conference begins with field trips followed by two days of workshops and keynote addresses for teachers to develop their content and pedagogical skills for teaching.

Beyond School Hours XIX- Dallas, TX; March 9-12, 2016. At this conference educators and administrators will have the opportunity to network, share ideas, and engage in professional development and capacity building. Strands include: Meeting the Needs of Diverse Learners, Equipping Students for 21st Century College and Career Pathways, and Captivating Students through STEM, Literacy and More.

PreCollege Opportunities

Through the Looking Glass Scholarships - Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are pleased to announce new scholarships specifically for high school seniors or college students who have parents with disabilities.  A total of fifteen $1000 scholarships will be given out Fall 2016. 

Making Innovations in Engineering and Science (MINES) – Summer Camp for Young Women is a week long summer camp that exposes young women to some of the most exciting careers of the future! Through hands-on experiments, field trips, and lab-based activities, students get to experience what it’s like to work in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. Each day will focus on a different area of STEM and will take students to various parts of Montana’s vast outdoor classroom including caverns, streams, mountains, and geysers! Throughout the camp, students will work alongside professors and professionals and will get to meet and connect with some of the amazing women who work in STEM to make a difference in the world today. We welcome applications from all young women who will be entering their sophomore or junior year of high school and who have an interest in STEM. We especially encourage young women from minority populations to apply (must be a U.S. citizen).

The Congressional App Challenge is a competition aimed at encouraging U.S. high school students to learn how to code by creating their own applications. The Challenge is intended to highlight the value of computer science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and encourage students to engage in these fields. By encouraging and recognizing our nation’s young programming talent, Congress hopes to shine a light on the growing importance of these skills. Representatives Mimi Walters and Hakeem Jeffries co-chair the 2015 Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge will last from November 9, 2015 through January 21, 2016, and is open to all U.S. high school students in participating districts. Challenge participants are invited, either as individuals or as teams, to create and submit their own software application (“app”) for mobile, tablet, or other computing devices on a platform of their choice. A panel of local computer science professionals and congressional representatives will judge the apps, and the winners in each district will have the honor of being recognized by their Congressional representative.

NASA Internships are educational hands-on traineeships that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as educators. These internships integrate participants with career professionals emphasizing mentor-directed, degree-related, real-world task completion. During the internship participants engage in scientific or engineering research, development, and operations activities. In addition, there are non-technical internship opportunities to engage in professional activities which support NASA business and administrative processes. 

Undergrad Opportunities

Buick Achievers Scholarship - This is the sixth year Buick Achievers scholarships will be awarded to students who have an interest in studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), excel in the classroom and give back to their communities. Special consideration is given to students who are female, minorities, first-generation college students, military veterans and military dependents. Applications are accepted through 5p.m. EST on Monday, Feb. 29.

Cooperative Institute for Climate Science Research Internship Program - The Cooperative Institute for Climate Science at Princeton University in collaboration with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) is recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students for 8-10 week research internships in atmospheric, oceanic and earth system science. 

Research Experiences for Undergraduates - The Department of Astronomy of Cornell University is pleased to announce its 2016 Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. Students will work on individual research projects with Cornell faculty and research staff on a wide range of topics in planetary science, astronomical instrumentation, astrophysics, general relativity and cosmology. Students interested in computer science and engineering are also encouraged to apply.

Native American Research Internship at the University of Utah - is a dynamic summer research opportunity for Native American/Alaska Native Undergraduate Junior and Senior students who are interested in Health Science and Biomedical careers. It is a 10-week, paid summer internship, funded by the National Institutes of Health. The internship focus is to provide Native American/Alaska Native students an outstanding laboratory or clinically based research experience working alongside world-class research faculty. The goal of the internship is to support the academic, career, and personal development of Native American/Alaska Native students who are interested in Health Science careers. Summer Research Initiative - Established in 1999, the University of Maryland's Summer Research Initiative (SRI) is part of the College’s longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences. All students who will be rising juniors or seniors in Fall 2016 are eligible for the Summer Research Initiative.

The STEM Advancement Program - The STEM Advancement Program (STEMAP) engages students from New Mexico regional universities, community colleges, and tribal colleges in the research funded by New Mexico EPSCoR over the summer and continues to support students throughout the academic year. Undergraduate students who will not earn a bachelor’s degree before August 8, 2016, are either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, and are enrolled at any college in New Mexico (except for the main campuses of the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and New Mexico Tech). All Diné College campuses are eligible.

Call for Applicaitons - BME-SIM REU - The Departments of Engineering, Kinesiology and Physical Therapy at East Carolina University will conduct a 10 week summer research program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for 8 undergraduate students from May 26th - July 31st.  The goal of the BME-SIM REU is to provide a quality research experience to undergraduate students in order to increase awareness of and application to graduate school. Program participants will receive a $5,000 stipend, on-campus housing, meal plan, travel to a research conference, and reimbursement of travel funds (dependent on need).

Research Experience for Undergraduates - The QESST Engineering Research Center offers undergraduates the opportunity to participate in solar energy research. Through work on the pilot line, students will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and gain experience directly relevant to industry, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate the commercial impact and relevance of their ideas by guiding them through the steps required to bring new ideas to commercialization; bridge the gap between the typical “research” devices and commercial solar cells, allowing fabrication and analysis of technologies on commercial-size devices and commercial equipment; and work in a facility that allows new equipment or processes to be analyzed and assessed jointly with industry. Students will play a key role in this process.

The National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) Undergraduate Internship Program matches six undergraduate interns enrolled in STEM disciplines with high-level NEON projects. We are seeking students who show promise for leadership and functional skills and in particular, are encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply.  All travel to and from Boulder, CO and housing expenses are paid by NEON and students will be offered a generous salary— all while gaining valuable professional experience working closely with NEON staff mentors. Additionally, our interns receive training and other opportunities to develop their communications, leadership and other professional skills that will help set them up for success in their future education and career aspirations.

The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program offers students a variety of academic and career experiences that will support their dental and medical school career preparation. All the housing costs and most meals are covered by the program. Scholars are provided with a $600 stipend which is typically distributed at the midway and at the end of the program. Some program sites offer travel assistance awards. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation also provides a needs-based scholarship for travel to and from the program site.

Diversity Summer Health-Related Research Education Program (DSHREP) Each summer, the Office of Student Affairs/Diversity at MCW-Milwaukee offers its signature programs to promote diversity in the medical field and provide an exceptional gateway to clinical careers. MCW's summer enrichment programs are designed for students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research.

PRograms to Increase Diversity Among Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research (PRIDE)- Applications are being accepted for the all-expense paid Summer Institute in Cardiovascular Genetic Epidemiology at Washington University in St Louis, School of Medicine. The all-expense-paid program focusing on Cardiovascular Genetic Epidemiology brings participants together for 3-week sessions during two consecutive summers, with a short mid-year visit and an Annual Meeting for all PRIDE Mentees and Mentors across 6 programs and the NHLBI. The PRIDE program provides mentor-mentee partnerships with matching based on common research interests.

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program awards five women postdoctoral scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each for their contributions in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields and commitment to serving as role models for younger generations. The program is the U.S. component of the L'Oreal-UNESCO For Women in Science International Fellowships. Celebrating its twelfth year in the U.S., the For Women in Science program has awarded 60 postdoctoral women scientists nearly $3 million in grants.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in disciplines related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, or technology, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA’s programs and mission. Over 100 students are selected each year for participation in the Ernest F. Hollings scholarship program. The scholarship includes support for two years of undergraduate study and a paid summer internship at a NOAA facility across the country.

2016 Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Archaeological and Museum Conservation Science at the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute- The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute in conjunction with the NSF REU Sites Program is offering short-term opportunities for undergraduates to work on research projects with staff members of its technical studies and research group, contingent on continued funding.  The Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) is the center for specialized technical collections research and conservation for all Smithsonian museums, collections, and research centers.  MCI combines state-of-the-art instrumentation and scientific techniques to provide technical research and characterization of objects. Internships will take place during the summer.  Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate in a university program or scheduled to matriculate in the fall term following the internshipA stipend will be offered for a period of 10 weeks starting in late May or early June.

Udall Undergraduate Scholarship: This $7,000 scholarship is awarded to 60 undergraduate sophomores and juniors pursuing careers related to Tribal Public Policy or Native Health Care. Udall Scholars get to attend the Udall Scholar Orientation in August, meeting alumni and tribal leaders for exceptional networking opportunities, and gain lifetime membership to a growing and active alumni network. 

Native American Congressional Internship: This ten-week summer internship in Washington, D.C., is for Native American and Alaska Native students who wish to learn more about the federal government and issues affecting Indian Country. The internship is fully funded: the Foundation provides round-trip airfare, housing, per diem for food and incidentals, and a stipend at the close of the program.

Native American and Pacific Islander Research Experience Opportunity for Undergraduates at LSAMP Affiliated Institutions-The Organization for Tropical Studies announces a research experience and cultural exchange program for Native American and Pacific Islander undergraduate students (NAPIRE). NAPIRE takes place in Costa Rica and introduces students to ecological research in the tropics. Students apply scientific methods to ecological inquiry and discovery and complete an individual field research project under the guidance of an experienced Research. NAPIRE is open to undergraduate science students interested in field ecology from LSAMP affiliated institutions. Students must be US citizens or Permanent Residents. Native American and Pacific Islander students are strongly encouraged to apply. To be eligible for NAPIRE 2016, students cannot be graduating from college before December 2016. NAPIRE 2016 covers round-trip air travel to Costa Rica and transportation during the course. Support for eight weeks at OTS’ field stations includes food and housing, research permits and supplies, mentoring from an experienced faculty researcher. Students receive a research stipend of $4000. The program will be held in Costa Rica from June 7 to August 3, 2014. 

The Biophysical Society Summer Research Program- The Biophysical Society Summer Research Program is an 11 week program for undergraduate minority students, disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities, that offers the opportunity to learn from top scientists from all over the country. Students attend lectures by local and visiting professors and engage in hands on lab work at the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus. Students will have an opportunity to strengthen their presentation skills, prepare for the GRE’s, develop a personal statement, and receive invaluable career advice while gaining graduate-level research experience. Several previous participants have even published alongside leading researchers as a result of their Summer Program experience.  While the focus is on rigorous academics and learning, the social experience that results from bringing students together is also an integral part of the program. The 2016 Summer Program will take place from May 10-July 21.

Blue Waters Graduate Fellowship program is designed to support PhD students who are engaged in a program of study and research that is directly relevant to the use of Blue Waters. Preference will be given to candidates engaged in a multidisciplinary research project that combines disciplines such as computer science, applied mathematics and computational science applications. The Fellowship provides graduate students from across the country the opportunity to immerse themselves in a year of focused high-performance computing (HPC) research. Fellows will receive a stipend of $38,000, up to a $12,000 tuition allowance, and up to 50,000 node-hours on the petascale Blue Waters supercomputer to support their research.

UMD BSOS Summer Research Initiative (SRI)- Our program provides rising juniors and seniors an opportunity to increase their interest in research careers in the social and behavioral sciences, develop research skills, and learn about doctoral training with the goal of encouraging students to pursue doctoral degrees in the social and behavioral sciences. The program has a special emphasis on population groups underrepresented in these fields (i.e., African Americans, Hispanics, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders).

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at the American Museum of Natural History is a full-time, 15-month fellowship Master's program that takes place at the museum and in urban partner schools. We seek a student body with diverse life and career experience who want to change lives by becoming middle- and high-school Earth science teachers. All degree candidates will receive free tuition and books, and a $30,000 living stipend. In return, candidates commit to teaching in a high-need New York State school for four years. Our program is filling a critical need - in 2012, our inaugural class made up HALF of the newly certified Earth science teachers in New York State, and we have a 100% employment record. We're looking for a diverse student body that can inspire kids from all walks of life.

2016 Agnese Nelms Haury Scholarship- This Native American and First Nations scholarship provides support (tuition fees and living costs) for indigenous students from the United States and Canada to study for a one-year taught Masters degree at Oxford University in the United Kingdom in association with Linacre College. Linacre College is an interdisciplinary and international graduate college in Oxford University.

2016 Summer Research Initiative (SRI) at the University of Maryland-Established in 1999, the Summer Research Initiative (SRI) is part of the College’s longstanding commitment to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities who pursue graduate degrees in the social, behavioral and economic sciences.

2016 Summer Internships at the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute- The Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute (MCI) is offering short-term opportunities to work on research and conservation projects with staff members. The internships are intended mainly for the summer of 2016, but consideration will be given to projects at other times during the year.  Preference will be given to applicants currently enrolled in conservation training programs or graduate students in related subjects. A stipend may be offered for a period of up to 10 weeks. 

Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences Desert Research Institute-The family and friends of Jonathan O. Davis, a prominent U.S. geologist and geoarchaeologist and a DRI faculty member, have established an endowment that provides a yearly national Jonathan O. Davis Scholarship, as well as a stipend for a University of Nevada, Reno student.  Jonathan was tragically killed in an automobile accident in December 1990.  It is the wish of his family and friends to support graduate students working on the Quaternary geology of the Great Basin, research close to Jonathan’s heart.  The national scholarship is $7,500 and the University of Nevada, Reno stipend is $7,500. The national scholarship, administered by the Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences of the Desert   Research Institute, is open to graduate students enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. program at any university in the United States.  The stipend, also administered by the Division of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, is open to graduate students enrolled in an M.S. or Ph.D. program at the University of Nevada, Reno.  The research, however, must have a substantial geologic component or demonstrate a strong reliance on geological techniques and must be focused on the Great Basin. Future Faculty Fellowship - ADVANCE Office of Faculty Development at Northeastern University-Northeastern University created the Future Faculty Fellowship (postdoctoral fellowship program) in fall 2012. This program strives to early identify young scholars for postdoctoral studies and possible consideration for a future faculty position at Northeastern University. We invite nominations and applications from candidates in all disciplines represented at Northeastern University for the Future Faculty Fellowship Program.

NASA Internships are educational hands-on traineeships that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as educators. These internships integrate participants with career professionals emphasizing mentor-directed, degree-related, real-world task completion. During the internship participants engage in scientific or engineering research, development, and operations activities. In addition, there are non-technical internship opportunities to engage in professional activities which support NASA business and administrative processes. Through these internships, participants leverage NASA's unique mission activities and mentorship to enhance and increase their professional capabilities and clarify their long-term career goals.

Northwest Native American Research Center for Health (NW NARCH)-Through the NARCH program funded by the Indian Health service and NIH, the Board is able to provide a limited number of scholarships to support research career development in the biomedical sciences.  Historically, the NARCH fellowships have supported AI/AN students pursuing MPH degrees, other master's degrees, PhD’s in social and biomedical sciences, MD’s, and other doctoral-level degrees. Successful candidates will receive monthly stipends to support their studies, and can use the funds as they see fit for career development.  Doctoral candidates will receive stipends of 37K per year, and master's level students will receive 28K per year.  The scholarships will be awarded on a first come, first served basis as long as the grant support allows.  The successful candidates must demonstrate satisfactory progress toward degree completion during the course of their awards.
