ExxonMobil Geosciences (Field Work) Scholarship Program

AISES and ExxonMobil have teamed up to establish an exciting scholarship opportunity, the AISES ExxonMobil Geosciences Scholarships Program.  Through ExxonMobil’s generous support, AISES is offering $3,000 scholarships in the 2017- 2018 academic year to assist students pursuing degrees in the geosciences in financing field work and research.  Scholarships are intended to directly support geology mapping / geological field based analysis, or geophysical fieldwork.

This program will enable Native American/Alaskan Native/Native Hawaiian students to gain actual experience in the geosciences field.  Selected scholars must utilize the funding for geosciences field camps (normally undergraduates) and/or field based research (typically occurs at the MS/PhD levels).

Geosciences field camps are typically held in the summer and are designed to prepare students for successful careers in the geosciences.  Most geosciences bachelor degrees have a field camp requirement.  Typically, students complete their field camps the summer after their junior or senior year, but it can be completed anytime.  Camp curricula emphasize scientific methodology and traditional techniques that provide a strong foundation for the broad range of modern technologies used by today’s industry, academic, government and private workforces. Students learn to develop research strategies, collect field observations and measurements, compile detailed rock descriptions, measure stratigraphic sections, and construct geologic maps and cross sections.

The United States Geological Survey agency (USGS) maintains a comprehensive list of geoscience field camps operated by colleges and universities throughout the United States. The USGS updates this list annually, so that you may find links to the most recent website available for each field camp. In instances where an institution does not provide a dedicated geology field camp website, you will be directed to the institution's geology department homepage or the department's course list.   Check it out at: http://education.usgs.gov/nagt/geofieldcamps.html.  The field camps listed provide at least 6 credit-hours and many accept students from other schools.  Each school has its own application timeline and program requirements.

Apply Now!  Undergraduate geosciences majors who have applied to and/or been accepted to a Summer 2017 geoscience field camp are encouraged to apply for these AISES ExxonMobil Geosciences Scholarships now.  (Note:  Many field camp application periods may have closed by now, however, students who are applying for a fall 2017 field camp may also apply for a scholarship.)  Students who are selected will receive up $3,000 to help offset the costs of participating in a geosciences field camp.  Likewise, MS or PhD geosciences students who need financial assistance for planned and approved Summer or Fall 2017 field based research may also apply for a scholarship now.
