AISES Honors Dr. Lydia Jennings
Dr. Lydia Jennings (Huichol and Pascua Yaqui) is a remarkable former AISES student who is paying forward the support she received in a significant way. Dr. Jennings, who completed her doctorate in soil microbiology and soil reclamation in 2020, co-developed a campaign with AISES to raise funds for students who were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through a peer-to-peer campaign, Dr. Jennings raised thousands for the AISES Together Towards Tomorrow (T3 Fund), which is ongoing. There is still time to donate to her fundraiser. Click Here

In early 2021, Dr. Jennings set a goal of completing a 50-mile fundraising run to honor 50 Indigenous scientists who inspired her own academic achievements — one scientist per mile. Dr. Jennings chose this goal because, as she worked on her dissertation citing Indigenous research, she found herself thankful for the scholarship of so many whose work created pathways for herself and others.
Dr. Jennings is an ambassador with the outdoor clothing and gear giant Patagonia, which helped produce an 18-minute documentary of her run. The film, Run to Be Visible, was released in nine different languages.
Thank you for helping students like Dr. Jennings do their very best in extraordinary times. We congratulate Dr. Jennings on her accomplishments, we thank her for her advocacy, and we look forward to the seeing the positive impact her efforts will certainly have on current and future generations.
