Registration Now Open for the NAIVSEF Junior Division

Post Date: February 4 2016

Students interested in participating in the NAIVSEF Junior Division (grades 5-8) may now register online!  Registration runs from February 4 to February 19, 2016.

AISES is hosting its third virtual science and engineering fair this spring!  The National American Indian Virtual Science and Engineering Fair (NAIVSEF) is a Society for Science and the Public (SSP) affiliated science fair and as such is part of the larger SSP fair network. The NAIVSEF differs from other SSP-affiliated fairs in that it is a “Virtual Science Fair.”  Unlike live fairs, virtual fairs do not require travel as the fair and judging is conducted online and via teleconference calls.

Junior Division participants submit their project slideshows and videos online.  Last year’s winning entries can be viewed here:  http://www.aises.org/programs/pre-college.  AISES awards cash prizes to Junior Division winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd places).

AISES permits students from 5th-12th grades to participate in its NAIVSEF event. There are two categories for entrants, Senior Division (defined as grades 9-12) and Junior Division (defined as grades 5-8).  Per ISEF rules, only high school students (grades 9-12) may go on to participate in the ISEF.  Each division has its own timeline.  Fair days (the days that the required teleconference interviews with judges and participants are held) for Junior Division are April 23-24, 2016.  Students must be available on one of those two days.  If this were a live fair, those would be the days you would have to be on-site at the fair, whereas, in a virtual fair, these are the days you need to be available for your judges’ phone call.

NAIVSEF projects may be submitted by individual students or teams of up to two or three students.  Students must be an AISES Pre-College member (only $5, http://www.aises.org/membership) to participate.  Please make sure you or your students have your membership number on-hand before you attempt to register as it is required to register.

Registration: Students MUST register for this fair online. Students must follow ISEF International Rules and Guidelines (https://member.societyforscience.org/document.doc?id=398) regulations in addition to their AISES NAIVSEF division policies and rules.  This fair is designed to introduce middle school students to ISEF standards. Registrations are considered complete when all forms and documents have been completed and uploaded. For time/date stamp considerations, the completion date/time is used to determine when the entry was received. This event is limited to 75 middle school projects.  Teams designate a team leader who registers and submits required forms on behalf of all team members.

The AISES 2016 NAIVSEF Junior Division Policies, Procedures and Rules, the NAIVSEF timeline, NAIVSEF forms, and the link to our online registration platform are posted on our website at http://www.aises.org/events/naivsef.

Please note:  AISES communicates with participants primarily via email.  Students must check for email regularly or may use their sponsor’s email address instead of their own.  The system will send emails only to the designated “student” email address.  The system asks for both a sponsor and student email address, but will only utilize the email address entered in the student email space.

Fees: The registration fee is $10.00 per Junior Division project (not per student).  Fees are due by March 15, 2016.
