ISSUE FOCUS:
MAKING THE MOST OF THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE
The 2016 AISES National Conference in Minneapolis is coming up quickly. There's still time to register, so don't miss any of the three action-packed days. From November 10 through November 12, there'll be no shortage of things to do, people to meet, and speakers to learn from as we explore the conference motto: Traditional Knowledge. New Ideas. A Better World. We're talking about nearly 2,000 attendees, 40 sessions, and 200 exhibitors, all under one very big roof!

So many attendees have described past conferences as a life-changing experience, you'll want to make sure you walk away feeling the same. And because there will be so much happening at this one-of-a-kind annual event, you really need to have a plan. Here are some tips that will help you make the most of any conference, but especially the AISES National Conference.

> Becoming Conference Savvy

You already know you can't do everything at National Conference. But what you can do is make the most of what you came for. Of course, there will be some "stand-alone" events, like the Opening Ceremony, the Closing Banquet, and the Powwow, that you won't want to miss. But there are many other events and sessions that take place concurrently, so you'll need to choose which you want to attend during a given time frame. For example, on Thursday, November 10, at 2 p.m., there are sessions ranging from "Career Fair Savvy" to "Robots, Robots, Everywhere" and how to cultivate an "Executive Presence." On the AISES online agenda page, you can click on each session and read more about what will be covered, and the expert(s) leading the session.

The tips in this guide for conference-goers will help you maximize opportunities at any conference you attend, but most importantly the unique annual get-together of AISES members, sponsors, and friends. READ MORE

> Conference Tips

  • Focus. Let the people in your life know in advance that you'll be tied up for three days. Try to put everything you can on the back burner so you can focus on all that's available to you at the conference.
  • Be present. We all tend to check email and text messages habitually. But for face-to-face meetings, put down the phone and look at people when they're talking, and truly listen. That will put you in a position to ask a smart question and get a conversation going, whether you're in a formal session or chatting in a hallway.
  • Stay positive and open. Not all of us are outgoing, social people, but there's a place for all of us at the AISES event. Put yourself out there, even if it's a stretch for you. You'll see it pay off.
  • Have your info ready to share. That means your elevator pitch as well as your business cards. Make an impression!
  • Hang onto that badge. It's a thing: you must wear your conference registration badge at all times. (And there's a replacement fee if you lose it.)
> Conference Do's and Don'ts

Do
  • Be sure to register; there's still time
  • Become familiar with the venue map before you get there
