ISSUE FOCUS:
BUILDING YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

> Take These Simple Steps Toward Your Best Public Image

The term "personal brand" might seem more like marketing jargon than something each of us builds every day. But your "brand" simply refers to how you show the world who you are; it's your reputation and everything that contributes to it. When you have a strong, consistent brand, you are letting your friends, teachers, and co-workers know what an amazing person you are in everything you do.

You express your personal brand in all your choices: from your clothes to your work and your friends. Still unsure of what a personal brand is? Well, it's you! More specifically, a personal brand is a cultivated and detailed public image that you can use to present yourself to the rest of the world. When someone thinks of your public image, they should imagine a series of distinct details that communicate your personal message about yourself - maybe something like "I am a conscientious worker and contribute to my community" - and an overall sense of who you are. NEXT STEPS

    > I Have My Brand. Now What?

Maintaining and refining your brand are just as important as developing it in the first place. Get in the habit of assessing the persona you present to the world because when you understand the importance of cultivating your personal brand, you'll be enthusiastically committed to it for the long-term personal and professional benefits.
    • Step 1: Never stop learning. Once you are happy with your personal brand, there will still be room to grow. You owe it to your audience, as much as yourself, to evolve your personal brand. A stagnant brand has difficulty drawing new members to an audience, while one that reinvents and renews itself fluidly draws consistent attention. Evaluate your brand's evolution so far and where it has taken you, and consider whether your goals have changed in that time.
    • Step 2: Find your affinity group. Most likely, there are others out there with brands similar to your own. If you have your brand but are finding it difficult to expose it and gain a stronger following, try seeking out your peers. Learn from others, and see what works for them. Just as important, understand what doesn't work, and especially learn from others who have fallen short in your field. Most of the time, your peers will be approachable and help you avoid the mistakes they made.
    • Step 3: Work together. Your peers might also be open to some form of collaboration. After your work together is over, reflect on what you've gained. Take what they showed you and see if it's something you can incorporate into your brand, but do not compromise and use something of theirs simply because it works for them. Remember that you aren't your peers, and your goals, and the methods you use to reach them, are not the same.
