Position Summary: The Engagement Officer is responsible for working directly with college and university, professional, and tribal chapters to create and/or increase Indigenous student support systems on campuses, in affiliated schools, and when applicable, community centers, and/or tribal nations. We hope to build a more visible bridge of student and professional success supports from AISES to the chapters and their members, and in many cases the campuses and communities where they exist. The overall goal is to help Indigenous students and professionals to be successful in their STEM educational and/or career pursuits. This will involve the creation of advocacy campaigns, at the direction of the Sr. Director of Engagement and Advocacy, for campuses, higher education leadership, and communities that are unfamiliar with Indigenous peoples, their innate need to maintain tribal identities, and their educational needs as articulated by the students and professionals. Information on AISES may need to be presented to professional and tribal communities as part of this advocacy effort. AISES strives to build supportive and respectful environments that reflect Indigenous students’ and professionals’ unique needs and cultural backgrounds to assist them while they are pursuing STEM degrees or building and enhancing their careers. Knowledge of higher education administration and familiarity with departments working on campuses to support Indigenous students is critical, experience working with campus administrative leaders is preferred.
