Check out these fun and exciting STEM Day sessions on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 from 12:00 pm – 4:00pm MDT !!

Session: Boeing STEM Day : ecoAction Virtual Field Trip and Creating Solutions for the AISES Energy Challenge

Presenter: Chelsea Chee, AISES

Time: 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm MDT

On the ecoAction Virtual Field Trip, students will investigate the themes of air, land, water, and waste as they explore how they can do their part to improve the environment as well as how a large company like Boeing is doing its part. Creating Solutions for the AISES Energy Challenge will take place during the second half of this session. Learn how to create energy solutions from those with first hand experience, current Energy Challenge high school students. Students will present the energy solutions they created for their communities using the Engineering Design Process.

Session: Boeing STEM Day : Hoop Gliders

Presenter: Susanna Packauskas-Lewalski , Rachel Yellowhair, Shane Blair and Thomas Reed, Raytheon

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm MDT

Things that fly—like insects, birds, and airplanes—all have wings. But wings are not all the same shape and size. Different wings can be better for different kinds of flight. For example, and eagle has long, wide wings that help it glide. An airplane has wings with small flaps that move up and down to turn the plane. But what does a hoop glider use and can it fly? Join us as we experiment with a different type of paper airplane and discover that some wings are actually hoops.

Please have the following materials with you while you attend this interactive session: Paper, scissors, tape and straws.

Session: Boeing STEM Day : Weaving Traditional Knowledge into Western Science using the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron

Presenter: Bernie Petit, Education Coordinator-Indigenous Programs, Canadian Light Source Inc.

Time: 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm MDT

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a particle accelerator the size of a football field, producing synchrotron light to see structural and chemical properties of atoms and molecules to conduct research. Collaboration with diverse perspectives and approaches is necessary to understand complex questions. CLS creates partnerships between First Nation, Metis, and Inuit (FNMI) communities to develop opportunities to engage teachers, students, and communities. The TREE, Arctic Fox and Bison projects form unique opportunities to discover what is revealed about First Nation and Metis Women’s historical role in saving the Bison from extinction, learning stories told in the rings of trees, and the Arctic fox winter survival science. Learning the “Bison Herstory” will empower FNMI women to reclaim their status within innovative research. This presentation reviews the different CLSI programs available for students that would like to complete an innovative science project that incorporates Traditional Knowledge and Western Science and is communicated to their community in the Traditional Cultural Expression of their choice.

Session: Boeing STEM Day : An energetic session on Land, Food, Energy, Air and Water i.e. Matter that matters; and Space, or lack thereof…

Presenter: Craig Wilson, Director USDA Future Scientists Program & Senior Research Associate, Texas A&M University

Time: 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm MDT

This session has ‘hands-on, inquiry-based’ activities to enhance observation skills that are the basis of Science. LAND: learn how little land is available for cultivation on Earth through activities with soil. FOOD and ENERGY: learn how Agricultural research leads to better and more food. Burn an almond to boil water. Work out calorific value. See food as one source of energy. AIR: learn how fragile Earth’s ecosystem is and what proportion is made up of air. WATER: learn the percentage of the Earth that is water and how precious it is and how it is recycled.

hackAISES: Wells Fargo Bank Mini-Hackathon

If you are a high school student interested in computer science or coding join hackAISES on Wednesday October 14th from 4:15 pm-7:00 pm MDT (Conference registration is required).

This hackathon, sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank, will focus on cyber security and is tailored to the skill level of high school students. Join AISES and Security Innovations for a live hands-on activity to explore the field of cyber security. Students will use CMD+CTRL, a hands-on training platform that uses insecure software to learn about and develop security skills.
