USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory Internship

Internship applications are due January 31, 2021

 

Multiple positions are available with AISES partner USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), the national wood research laboratory within the U.S. Forest Service. The internships will be located in Madison, Wisconsin. The internship duration is 10 weeks and is set to begin in June 2021.

 

Interns will work in the Forest Service Products Laboratory and in the field with a supervisor. The selected interns will work under the direction of an FPL scientist (or researcher). They will assist with projects conducted in the FPL’s new structural testing laboratory and/or at field work sites; typical tasks will involve testing and computer data analysis.

Interns Are Provided:

  • Round-trip airfare or mileage to internship site up to $500
  • Weekly stipend - $600
  • Lodging will be secured and covered by AISES*

*Please note that lodging is for the intern only. Family and friends cannot be accommodated, as each intern will be assigned another intern as a roommate whenever feasible.

 

Intern Candidates

The Forest Products Laboratory is seeking an intern with a (civil, structural, transportation, mechanical) ENGINEERING-focused background and an intern with a (marketing, natural resources) BUSINESS-focused background. Ideal student candidates will be enrolled as a senior working toward an undergraduate degree or pursuing further graduate studies. Sophomores and juniors with appropriate academic and background will also be considered. Interns will be required to take computer security training before granted access to the FPL computer network.

 

For the engineering-related position, the focus will be on timber highway bridges, historic covered truss-bridges, and bridge inspection practices.

 

For the marketing-related position, the focus will be on technology transfer of key research results on tall-wood buildings, cross laminated timber (CLT) products, and cellulose Nano-materials that have a significant market impact for the following industries: bio-chemical, bio-energy and bio-products.

 

AISES Membership

All internships require applicants be current AISES members at the time of application. All applicants will be required to enter a valid AISES membership number. To get a membership number, join AISES or retrieve your membership number through the AISES Membership Portal.

 

Student Status

Students must be a full-time junior or senior undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited four-year college/university at the time of application.

 

Tribal Citizenship

Applicants must be an enrolled citizen or descendant of an enrolled citizen of a federally or state recognized American Indian Tribe, Alaska Native Village, or Native Hawaiian or descendant of a Native Hawaiian. Enrollment documents and/or a copy of birth certificate(s) showing descendancy from an enrolled citizen or Native Hawaiian are acceptable. Applicants may also, instead, provide a copy of their Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood or Certificate of Degree of Alaska Native Blood (CDIB) card.
