Multiple positions are available with AISES partner USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), the national wood research laboratory within the U.S. Forest Service. The internships will be located in Madison, Wisconsin.
Interns will work in the Forest Service Products Laboratory and in the field with a supervisor. The selected interns will work under the direction of an FPL scientist (or researcher). They will assist with projects conducted in the FPL’s new structural testing laboratory and/or at field work sites; typical tasks will involve testing and computer data analysis.
The Forest Products Laboratory is seeking an intern with a (civil, structural, transportation, mechanical) ENGINEERING-focused background and an intern with a (marketing, natural resources) BUSINESS-focused background. Ideal student candidates will be enrolled as a senior working toward an undergraduate degree or pursuing further graduate studies. Sophomores and juniors with appropriate academic and background will also be considered. Interns will be required to take computer security training before granted access to the FPL computer network.
For the engineering-related position, the focus will be on timber highway bridges, historic covered truss-bridges, and bridge inspection practices.
For the marketing-related position, the focus will be on technology transfer of key research results on tall-wood buildings, cross laminated timber (CLT) products, and cellulose Nano-materials that have a significant market impact for the following industries: bio-chemical, bio-energy and bio-products.
