2023 AISES in Canada National Gathering Wrap-Up

Celebrating the Fifth Annual Conference in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia!

Greetings!

Thanks to all those who attended the 2023 AISES in Canada National Gathering in Vancouver, British Columbia held on March 3 to 5.

This fifth annual event was open to the public and it provided a wealth of resources for professionals and students in STEM, delivering on the conference theme, “Reclaiming Our Wisdom.”

We were busy! Over 60 activities, events, and sessions were developed for 300 people in attendance - the largest number of attendees at any AISES in Canada National Gathering to date. Students from pre-college to PhD track definitely took advantage of the opportunity to polish their presentation skills, grow their networks, and discuss their STEM interests with professionals and other attendees.

Read about some of the sessions and the types of discussions and opportunities that were showcased throughout the conference. Scan the photo gallery. Pay particular attention to the event sponsors who contributed to our successful event.

AISES Board Chair Gary Burnette remarked, “The AISES in Canada National Gathering is one example of the network of support and resources AISES offers its members. The importance of increasing diversity in STEM fields in the development of today’s global economy and tomorrow’s future cannot be understated.”

We continue to be inspired by the leaders whose stories and commitment to STEM make AISES a better organization and our events a success. We thank our featured keynote speakers Dr. Andrea Reid (Nisga’a Nation) and Dr. Jeannette Armstrong (Syilx Okanagan). A fisheries scientist, Reid employs community-based approaches and Indigenous research methodologies in her study of culturally significant fish and fisheries at the University of British Columbia. Armstrong is a fluent speaker and teacher of the Syilx Okanagan language. She is a leading researcher of Okanagan Syilx thought and environmental ethics at the University of British Columbia.

AISES member John Desjarlais, Jr. (Nehinaw (Cree)-Métis) served as master of ceremonies. A professional engineer, John congratulated all of the participants for proactively immersing themselves in this experience and seizing opportunities as they arise to advance their personal and professional paths.

We hope you enjoy reading the AISES in Canada National Gathering Wrap-Up.
