AISES NewsJuly 29, 2010 The United States Navy invited AISES to be a part of the Educator Orientation Visit at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego. AISES sent John Lothrop (AISES Gift Officer) and Mary Jo Ondrechen (AISES Board of Director Vice-Chair) to attend the orientation. Here is the overview by John Lothrop: Mary Jo and I survived the submarine embark! What a great experience!! We were part of the Educator Orientation Visit at Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego. Also on the visit were representatives from other diversity organizations (SWE, NSBE, MAES) as well as several colleges and universities – about 20 visitors total. After having lunch on Thursday, we had a brief orientation and then spent the afternoon touring their submarine training center. The afternoon concluded with a presentation about the Navy’s programs for college students and graduates. The primary emphasis was on their nuclear propulsion officer program. On Friday, we boarded the USS San Francisco and sailed about 12 miles out into the Pacific Ocean. We all had an opportunity to join the Captain on the bridge of the submarine as we went out of (or into) the harbor. While at sea, we divided into small groups for tours of the submarine. As a show for their visitors, they went into a steep dive down to 600’ followed by a steep ascent back up to 150’. The Captain also put the boat through several other maneuvers for us. All in all, it was a great experience.
