Nathaniel Brown
AISES Undergraduate

I am sophomore at Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, KS. I am from Dennehotso/Kayenta, Arizona. I am from the Water Edge Water clan born for the Reed people my maternal grandfather are Towering House people, and my paternal grandfather are the Many Goats. I am majoring in the Environmental Science. Recently I attended the SACNAS conference in Salt Lake City, UT. I had the opportunity to meet so many great minds who have an interest in science, math, and medicine. I was very excited for networking with all the college students from many well respected Universities and tribal colleges. I also have attended the national AIHEC conference in Rapid City, SD. I also have a wonderful networking with college students. I volunteer numerous hours at Haskell and I will be starting a program for Haskell students to volunteer at the Haskell I.H.S facility. I have been talking with the CEO and I will start volunteering at the health facility next month. I ultimate goal is to get into pharmacy school and to become a pharmacist. In summer 2007 I did an internship with the Colville National Forest collecting data from stream surveys we conducted. I have learned invaluable education and have come to appreciate our streams and all the living organisms in it. In summer 2008 I had the privilege of working with some of the brightest students and the most dedicated at the Dine’ College in Tsaile, AZ. At Dine College we took a health research class, learned the basics of cancer and diabetes, and collected data at our home I.H.S health clinics. I had the best mentors, at the Kayenta I.H.S. The research I conducted with the Dine College has taught me a lot and open my eyes into cancer research for our Native people, as well as all minority people. There is not enough research for our people. The SREP program from Dine College was in partnership with the Mayo Clinic from Rochester, MN. I have the honor of working with very dedicated intellectual people. I have learned countless important vital information I will use for the rest of my life and to better my community on the Navajo reservation.
